Green Valley

Newsletter – Week 14

Message from Mr. O’ Connor

Dear Parents and Friends,

We reach the end of our first term with plenty to be grateful for, the teaching and learning, the musical events, the fundraising, the friendships and social and emotional wellbeing at school. Today, we celebrated the Green Valley Award Ceremony, with three awards presented to each class. The Academic Achievement Award, presented to the student with the highest average subject grade during this first term. The GVS Effort Award, given to the student who has displayed the most effort over all subjects and general ‘life’ here at school. The GVS Values Awards, given to the student who has most represented the school’s values, built on Human Values during this first term.

The reasons behind these awards are clear, and I spoke to the students and teachers about them during the ceremony. In July we received the IB Diploma Results from our last Year 13, two students achieved an outstanding 43 points out of 45 for their IB results. They can certainly enter into any university in the World, and they are in the highest academic tier in the World. The key to this is that they both historically won the Academic Achievement Awards here at school.  The message… if you are aiming for the most academic universities in the World, firstly you need to be the top in your class… and then compete with the World. Regarding effort, we have students that have finished in Green Valley and have already started their own business. This is an amazing example of effort and resilience. This needs to be cultivated and celebrated. Finally, and and most importantly, the Values Awards. In the era of Artificial Intelligence, more and more we are all talking about the importance of emotional connection and indeed Human Values. This is the foundation of our existence, and for this reason it is celebrated.

On another note, our thanks go out to the Friends of GVS, for organising the Christmas gifts for the team here in Green Valley. We are a close knit team and community, and on behalf of everyone, thank you.

Finally, a Christmas wish directly to you all. I mentioned this to the students during the Awards Ceremony. This Christmas, play a game with your children, any game, cards, anything. Embrace the moment, enjoy. A simple gesture goes a long way. Enjoy!

My best wishes as always.

Message from Ms. Jan Harvey

Dear Families,

We have reached the final days of our Autumn Term and what an amazing week we have had!

On Monday, ‘Yachting Gives Back’ came to collect the food for the food banks and the lovely gifts you had donated. We filled 3 cars full to the brim, as you can see below. Thank you as always for all your generosity. It makes us so proud to have you all as a part of our GVS Family.

On Tuesday, there was a beautiful musical performance by all our primary children at Portals Christmas Market. Thank you to Mr. Billy and Ms. Rosh for preparing them and to all of you for ensuring they were there and cheering them on with such enthusiasm.

We finished Wednesday off with a movie and popcorn afternoon, interspersed with our Silver Certificate Awards. These were given to the children who have had full green dots throughout the entire term. Well done!

On Thursday we finished our Autumn Term with our Charity Christmas Fair. As always it was a wonderful way to wrap up the term. Thank you to all who donated the delicious cakes, etc. we have some very talented bakers among our families! Whilst having a great time, we raised 3.416€ for Yachting Gives Back. This money will be used to help families in need throughout the island.

Thanks:

Message from Mr. Murphy

Dear Families,

As we reach the end of Term 1, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on what has been a positive and productive period for our Secondary community. Students have shown commitment, resilience, and growth across academic and wider school life, and we are proud of the way they have represented both themselves and GVS throughout the term.

Firstly, I would like to congratulate our Academic Award winnersEffort Award winners, and GVS Values Award recipients. These awards recognise not only high attainment, but also consistency, perseverance, and the everyday behaviours that reflect our school values. We are proud of all students who were recognised, and we commend the commitment and attitude they have shown in their learning and conduct.

As we move into the holiday period, I would also like to thank our staff and families for their continued support and partnership. The success of this term has been built on strong collaboration between home and school, and we look forward to continuing this work in the new year.

I wish all families a happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year, and I look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for the next stage of the academic journey in 2026.

Warm regards,

Mr. S. Murphy
